1959 Indian Woodsman |
Royal Enfield has resurrected the Bullet Woodsman which was originally produced by RE between 1955-59 and sold in USA under the Indian brand. A single cylinder Bullet Engine with high braced handlebars and raised exhaust. But the similarities end here, the new Woodsman features front disc, wider tyres, single seat, Rear sets, alloy Bash Plate, luggage rack, electric starter and fuel injection. So let’s check out the woodsman in detail.
ENGINE
The Woodsman hosts a single cylinder, 4 stroke, and Fuel Injected mill producing 28.4 Ps @ 5250 rpm along with a torque output of 41.3 @ 4000 rpm. It comes with a 5- speed gearbox operated by 7 plate wet clutch which makes the gearing light and accurate. The Engine provides a good low and mid range torque, it cruises easily and without any signs of stress at 112 km/h and a flat out top speed of 136 km/h.
RIDE AND HANDLING
The rear sets and wide handlebar on woodsman make it handle nicely and along with the wide and better set of Avon tyres give some confidence in the corners compared to other bullets but don’t expect it to be a knee scraper in fact nothing near that. The Ride quality is a bit on the stiffer side with a low quality suspension. But keeping in mind that it is a bullet it is fine.
FEATURES
Royal Enfield has made use of today's technology by lading it with lot of features compared to what it used to come before. The fuel injection makes sure that the power delivery is smooth and a crisp throttle response is available to the rider, 280mm disc do the job of speed shedding well. The electric starter sure does help in making life simpler though some may prefer the kick starter for the feel. The luggage rack at the back comes in handy for strapping your bags and keeping your shoulder free making it a boon for touring. Double seating is missed but doesn't a rider's prefer riding solo? The speedo also houses the fuel injection and fuels warning light along with other telltale lights. So RE has kept it simple. Absence of trip meter is sorely missed but no other bullets feature it either.
QUALITY AND RELIABILITY
With the new engines being the Unit Construction ones, maintaining it has become simple. Quality of parts is good, fit and finish is crude at some places but, all in all a praise worthy job. I don't think i need to speak on the reliability front, Bullets as old as 20 years and more are still seen on the road that itself speaks for the reliability.
VERDICT AND PRICING
Well Royal Enfield has definitely brought back an Englishman's delight in the Woodsman. It is a Classic British Bike with all the modern features. It is on sale in England at 4,749 pounds (Rs 3,49,051) and is not available in India yet so let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that Royal Enfield brings it to India.
